Blue Beard
Chapter 2 of 6

The Forbidden Key

About a month after the wedding, the husband told his wife that he had to travel to another part of the country for six weeks because of important business.

"Enjoy yourself while I am away," he said. "Invite your friends, go to the country, have fun."

He gave her a large bunch of keys.

"These keys open the two big wardrobes with my best furniture. These open the rooms with my silver and gold plates. These open my money boxes and my jewellery cases. And this is the master key that opens all the rooms in the house."

Then he held up a small key.

"But this small key opens the closet at the end of the great hall on the ground floor. You must not open that door. I forbid it completely. If you open it, you will make me very angry."

His wife promised to do exactly as he said. He kissed her goodbye, got into his carriage, and left.
