Huck Keeps Watch
Tom and Huck worked out that "Number Two" was probably a room in one of the town's taverns, since the rooms were numbered. Huck took on the task of watching the tavern every night.
One night he saw Injun Joe come out in the dark, carrying something. Huck followed him quietly through the streets. Injun Joe stopped outside the house of the Widow Douglas, a kind and wealthy woman who lived alone on the hill.
Huck heard Injun Joe talking about revenge — the widow's late husband had once humiliated him, and he intended to harm her in return.
Huck ran to the nearest house and banged on the door. He told the Welshman who lived there what he had heard. The old man and his sons grabbed their guns and ran up the hill. Shots were fired in the dark. Injun Joe escaped into the woods. The Widow Douglas was unharmed.
Huck slipped away before anyone could ask his name.
