Huckleberry Finn

Tom's best friend was Huckleberry Finn — Huck for short. Huck was the son of the town drunk. He had no home, no school, and no rules. He slept in empty buildings, wore old clothes, and answered to nobody. All the mothers in town told their children to stay away from him. Tom admired him deeply.

One night, Huck came to Tom's window with a dead cat. He had heard that if you swung a dead cat in a graveyard at midnight and said the right words, it would cure warts. Tom immediately agreed to go with him.

At midnight they crept into the old graveyard on the hill. They hid behind some elm trees and waited. The only sound was the wind in the branches.

Then a lantern appeared in the dark. Three men were coming.
