Muff Potter in Prison

Muff Potter was arrested for the murder of Dr. Robinson. The whole town believed he was guilty. Only Tom and Huck knew the truth.

Tom could not sleep. He had nightmares about Injun Joe. During the day he went to the fence of the prison and passed small gifts through the bars to Potter — tobacco and matches — trying to ease his guilt without breaking his oath.

At school, Tom was restless and distracted. Becky Thatcher was still not speaking to him. He felt that nobody cared whether he lived or died. He began to think seriously about running away.
